Holiday Eggs

The holidays of spring—Easter, Passover, Mother’s Day, and even bridal and baby showers—are times to celebrate new beginnings with family and friends. In HOLIDAY EGGS, food and garden writer Georgeanne Brennan combines her areas of expertise to create a breathtaking collection of recipes and decorating ideas honoring the humble egg, symbol of birth and rebirth. More than 30 sweet and savory recipes take a starring role in traditional holiday feasts and impromptu springtime gatherings. Simple egg-dyeing and Easter-basket projects for kids as well as more sophisticated decorations like dyed Ukrainian eggs, eggshell candles, egg napkin rings, and a live flowering Easter basket centerpiece guarantee that your holiday table will look as beautiful as the food you serve.

Easter Crafts

K-Gr 3 These three titles are short on content and youngsters hoping to reproduce the crafts may be frustrated. The decorations, gifts, cards, and activities are presented on double-page spreads and introduced with readily available lists of Things Youll Need. Iridescent, slick graphics, which children could never duplicate, illustrate the instructions. Both teachers and children look for titles with clear, honest directions and finished projects that are possible to reproduce. These books have neither. Marcia W. Posner, Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center of Nassau County, Glen Cove, NY

Crafts For Easter

Ages 5^-8. Young crafters, primary-grade teachers, and caregivers will find this Easter craft book helpful. Ross' directions for creating and using the completed objects are simple and very clear. Holm's large, colorful drawings enhance the instructions, and Ross includes lists of supplies as well as decorating ideas. Most projects pertain to Easter--several kinds of Easter baskets, foil egg decorations, Easter wreaths and bonnets--but many of the ideas can be altered to reflect a more general spring focus. Chris Sherman

Easter Crafts (Paperback)
K-Gr 3-Many of the projects in these sometimes simplistic and slightly ambiguous titles ask readers to copy a pattern, cut it out, and color it. The generic black-line drawings highlighted in yellow (Easter) and red (Valentine) lack grace or charm. In Easter, bunnies abound; most have rounded shapes, but one rat-faced rabbit appears. ``Oliver the Baby Dragon'' is a questionable addition. In Valentine, there are hearts galore, and also rebuses, games, and a key for writing secret codes. Both books include some easy recipes. Phyllis and Noel Fiarotta's Cups & Cans & Paper Plate Fans (1993) and Teddy Cameron Long's Fantastic Paper Holiday Decorations (1994, both Sterling) include holiday crafts that rely less on tracing and copying. -Carole B. Fun-to-Make Crafts For Easter

Grade 3-6–These books have 150 crafts each, with toys, games, greeting cards, and holiday decorations to make. Each project includes step-by-step directions and a color photograph of the finished item. The crafts use a variety of materials and techniques, and are indexed by type: "Decorations," "Things to Wear," etc. For example, the ladybug sun catcher in Easter is made from a clear plastic lid, red tissue paper, felt, a wiggle eye, a chenille stick, and yarn; the newt bookmark in the second title is constructed from paper and wiggle eyes.
